Be Cool. Take the Effingham Plunge, Saturday, February 25th!

And you will be supporting Special Olympics Illinois athletes across the state, helping to provide them with life-changing programming. This includes year-round sports trainings and competitions, as well as leadership, personal development, and health education opportunities.  If you have any doubts about Polar Plunging, check out this video featuring Effingham County Lightning Special Olympics Athlete, Rachel Zakutanksy, and see how you make an impact in the lives of the Athletes we serve!

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run, along with Special Olympics Illinois Region I and the Effingham Water Authority, is totally stoked to host this event in 2023.

Plungers will have two options to participate:

Join Special Olympics Illinois here at the Effingham Plunge on beautiful Lake Sara at the beach.  Get your team costumes ready!  Plunger check-in is from 10:00am to 11:45am, with the Plunge kicking off at noon.  Hang out with us after the Plunge for the Post-Plunge party at the Effingham Event Center with a free meal from Niemerg's Steakhouse and plunger awards presentation, including best team and individual costumes!

Or, take the Polar Plunge experience into your own hands and Create Your Own Plunge (safely, of course) by clicking here.

Thanks for BEING SO COOL and supporting the more than 21,000 athletes in Illinois.

And of course, no matter where you are taking the Polar Plunge, don’t forget to document it! We are asking all Plungers to share their experiences with us and the Special Olympics Illinois community. Post it on social with the hashtag #PlungeIllinois is and tag our social profiles

When coordinating your Create Your Own Plunge efforts, please be safe. Do not attempt to jump into a lake, river or any other open body of water for the Create Your Own Plunge. Participants should not do anything that could physically harm themselves or others. Special Olympics Illinois is not responsible for any injuries that occur while participating in the Create Your Own Plunge event.

Post-Plunge Party

Join us immediately following the Effingham Polar Plunge at the Effingham Event Center, 1501 W. Fayette Avenue, in Effingham for the Post Plunge Party with food catered by Niemerg's Steakhouse and refreshments provided by Heartland Coca-Cola, door prizes, and Golden Plunger Awards!  Polar Plungers get into the Party and get their meal for FREE, but family members are also encouraged to attend the Post Plunge Party.  Non-plungers are asked to pay a small donation of $4 for adults and $2 for children to enjoy the awesome meal.
